A USB microscope can be useful for electronics or not ?
I was very skeptical before buying this gadget.
Everyone seems to use it for general inspection and not as a real time soldering equipment.
I have seen the excellent review of Todd Harrison which i highly recommend to watch before buying this gadget.
Two main things bothered me : how responsive would be on a fast desktop computer and if the distance between the microscope and the PCB board would be enough for soldering elaboration.
I bought this 800X microscope from e-bay and i must say that i was impatient to see its capabilities.

The package arrived today without a box. It came with a mini CD with the drivers a little stand, a calibration rule , a plastic cover for the lens and the microscope itself.
The given stand is without doubt an inspection only stand since the maximum distance between the microscope and the PCB can be few millimeters.
I was aware about that so i made a pretty simple modification. I have added a 20cm flexible arm.

Once done this modification i was able to use a classic 'third hand' tool in order to place the PCB board underneath the microscope :

Drivers worked well under Windows 7 64 bit version. I have also installed the 'Measurement' program.
This microscope came with two programs, one called 'CamApp' and one called 'Cooling Tech' (the 'Measurement' program from the menu).
The 'Cooling Tech' aka 'Measurement' application haven't recognized the USB microscope at all (at least under Win 7 64 bit).
I was forced to use the CamApp application for live microscope inspection.
The two applications are presented below :
Notice that 'Cooling tech' aka 'Measurement' does not capture the USB microscope but as we can see later you can use it to do measurements from the taken photos with 'CamApp'.
If you are not satisfied with CamApp you can use the Yawcam in order to get live stream from your USB microscope.
CamApp can take snapshots and video captures. Some demo videos will be posted later in this article.
Once again searching around internet i couldn't find any resource for the drivers so i decided like the UT-61e article to put online the hole installation CD made with imgburn.
Download the installation CD (Drivers & Software) of the 800x USB Microscope from here.
Download, unzip and then use imgburn in order to clone the installation CD.
In the next page we are going to take a deeper view of our microscope.
I'm wondering if anyone might know a solution to this.
I bought a USB microscope from eBay that wasn't supposed to work with Windows 10 but it did. It's supposed to be for XP, Vista and 7 (32bit and 64bit). It's a generic Chinese plug and play device that isn't supposed to require a driver to work. It comes with a driver CD in case it didn't work automatically.
It worked fine until Windows 10 force updated. Now when I plug it in, the LED lights come on the microscope but amcap states 'no video capture device was found'.
Device Manager can see USB2.0 PC Camera in Image Devices with a yellow exclamation mark. Properties/ General states, Manufacturer: AVEO
'This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)
Driver is not intended for this platform. Jay sean baby are you down. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.'
I've tried Update Driver Software / Search Automatically, but I get 'Driver not intended for this platform'. Then it comes up in Device Manager in Other Devices as Unknown Device.
I've tried Uninstall and then Scan for Hardware Changes. It just pops back to Image Devices as USB2.0 PC Camera with the yellow exclamation mark.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver on the CD. I right clicked the driver and chose Compatibility Mode Windows 7. I tried Compatibility Mode XP (Service pack 3) and the driver installed for 15 minutes (instead of a few minutes) and asked me to reboot as usual but that didn't work either. Instead Device Manager is showing '(Code 18) reinstall driver'. The driver is an InstallScript Setup Launcher so it can't be found.

It's this exact model and packaging. It states on the front USB 2.0 & 1.1 and there's a Java icon. There's no model number.

When electronics gets smaller and smaller, you first need a magnifier and sometimes a microscope. There are cheap small microscopes like one I used in my DIY fiber optic microscope article. The downside of traditional microscopes and those cheap small pocket microscopes is that you have to stay curved over the target sample to use them. And microscopes are also a quite annoying when you use glasses normally. In some cases using macro photography on digital camera can be used to look at the small details, but it has also has limitations.

This kind of microscopes used to be expensive years ago, but nowadays they much cheaper. So cheap that I tried on less than 25 USD product S02 25~500X USB Digital Photography Microscope Magnifier w/ 8-LED White Light – Black to see if it were of any use in electronics hacking.

This microscope was a very easy to use tool stating from installation. This USB microscope looks to computer as generic USB 2.0 webcam that is already supported on most operating systems without any extra drivers (the device comes with driver and software CD but you don't need necessarily install them). Worked well without drivers on Windows Vista and Windows 7 PCs. According to product review this should be Linux compatible with UVC webcam driver (I have not verified this). When I plugged in the microscope, I was ready to view the results with any existing software that can show pictures/videos from webcam.
This microscope has very handy light and focus adjustments, making it really quick to view anything. The microscope an easily focused to different distances. If could even be focused to objects around one meter a way, which means could work as sort of webcam. I could say that this USB microscope is basically just the same hardware as used in cheap webcams, just a little bit different optics and illumination LEDs added. The microscope comes with a stand, and can be used with the stand or without it. The plastic stand feels a little 'unsturdy', but it does its job acceptably in most of the time, but sometimes I would hope it to be more stable.
Ok photo quality considering the resolution is only 300KP (640 x 480), which is not very much. The unit comes with a plastic ruler for calibrating the size of the viewed objects and the software for windows which comes with it allows you to measure the ruler and set a scale for pixes x mm, so you are able to measure the real size of the viewed objects at a given focus. I tested the microscope with the Cooling Tech software that comes on the product CD and it works well. Another good software that works with this microscope is Micam. Both software allow viewing and measuring.

Besides looking at the electronics in details, this microscope can also be used as a cheap fiber optic microscope to look at fiber optic connectors.

I would recommend this product if you're looking for one that is as cheap as possible. It provides good value for money. If you are prepared to spend a little bit more money, it would also be a good idea to also look better resolution microscope alternatives (it seems that yo would get much higher resolution if you are prepared to pay double the price).
